The end is very near when you reach 9 months of pregnancy – finally, it is the last month. Fatigue gets more intense every day, but the difficulty in breathing gradually improves as the baby drops lower into the pelvic region. This relieves the organs that were so compressed and also the stomach, making eating easier.
Labor at Any Moment
After the physical exhaustion, which continues to increase every day and with every gram your belly gains, comes the mental exhaustion of labor anxiety. In the ninth month, labor can begin at any moment and the pregnant woman needs to be prepared to head to the maternity ward at any time. Good preparation can help reduce the difficulties for both mother and baby.
A recurring question among first-time mothers is:...

36 weeks
At the 36th week you officially enter the 9th month of pregnancy, and your baby is almost ready to be born. In addition to continuing to gain weight, the focus now is on finishing the lungs' maturation1 so the baby can breathe calmly right after birth. Breathing will be better for the woman in this phase, but trips to the bathroom will be even more frequent, as all the weight is now on the bladder.
37 weeks
Reaching the 37th week of the ninth month of pregnancy is a reason to celebrate, because if the baby is born now, they are no longer considered premature and are born at term. Starting this week, the fine hair known as lanugo2 that covered the baby's entire body now starts to fall off. The vernix that protected the skin from the liquid in which the baby was fully immersed for so long also disappears, giving way to more defined features, dimples, and unique baby characteristics.
38 weeks
We're almost at the finish line: at the 38th week of pregnancy, your baby now weighs about 3 kg on average, but continues to accumulate fat to be able to withstand the outside temperature. The body is functioning perfectly, including the brain and lungs. The intestines are also ready, and meconium has already formed, preparing to be expelled as the baby's first poop, which usually happens right after birth.
39 weeks
At the 39th week, the amniotic fluid3 that was once clear and transparent is now milky, as all the vernix from the baby's skin has come off and mixed with the amniotic fluid, along with skin residues that are shedding. Visits to the gynecologist are now more frequent to monitor the baby's heartbeat.
40 weeks
Finally, 9 months of pregnancy completed, the third trimester ends and with the 40th week the long-awaited moment arrives on average. Your baby is truly ready to come into the world and you may go into labor at any moment, so be prepared. The little one’s heart beats quickly, at a rate of 110 to 160 times per minute, and during the cardiotocography exam you will be able to follow along. Pay attention to signs such as belly tightening, cramps, and diarrhea, as these are signs that your labor is starting.
