One of the first questions people ask upon discovering a pregnancy is: what will be the baby's sex and how long will it take to find out? For the more anxious, there are tables and calculations that try to guess the baby's sex, but only an exam can confirm it.
How to Tell If It's a Boy or Girl
Some couples try to plan their child's sex at the time of conception, optimizing the chances for a boy or a girl. However, this doesn't always work, and even these parents will only find out much later if their tactic succeeded. Only detection methods can relieve the couple's anxiety about finding out the sex of their newest baby.

One of the guessing methods is the Chinese chart, which involves viewing a table where you combine the mother's lunar age with the month of conception, indicating whether it is a boy or a girl. The calculation should be done with the woman's age at the time she became pregnant, add 1, and combine that with the month of conception. Women born in January and February should not add +1, using only their exact age combined with the month.
Another way to find out the baby's sex is a method still little known and used called the fetal genital tubercle. However, if analyzed closely it is possible to reach a conclusion. During the nuchal translucency exam, around 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy, some doctors may offer their “guess” on the sex, but without 100% certainty as it is still too early to say. Through the ultrasound images, it is possible to check the angle and inclination of the fetal genital tubercle—if it is a boy, the angle is 30° in relation to the spine, and if it is a girl the tubercle appears straight.
Another option is the Intelligender method, which is very similar to a pharmacy test. It functions by detecting the Y chromosome through urine, which distinguishes whether the baby is male. If the urine changes to green, it means it is a boy; if it turns orange, it's a girl. This is not a safe way to find out the baby's sex, as errors may occur if the collected urine sample does not contain the Y chromosome, resulting in an incorrect result.
There are also homemade and popular methods to try to guess the baby's sex, which are nothing more than superstitious games passed down from the time of our grandmothers. The spoon and fork test is the best known. A spoon and a fork are hidden under two cushions and the pregnant woman is asked to sit down. If she chooses the spoon, it's a girl; if she picks the fork, it's a boy.
The pregnant woman's preference for certain foods is also seen as a possible indicator of the baby's sex. If the mother prefers salty foods during pregnancy, it's considered a boy, but if she prefers sweets, it could be a girl. Of course, these are just games and beliefs that will only be confirmed with tests that are truly reliable, like an ultrasound.
Those who don't want to rely only on games and suspicions can opt for the fetal sex determination test, which can be done starting at 8 weeks of pregnancy. The test involves collecting the mother’s blood to analyze and search for the Y chromosome. If it is present, it indicates the baby is a boy; if not, the baby is a girl. Normally, the result comes out within a week and it is completely safe.
