The birth control pill came to revolutionize women's sexual freedom and contraceptive methods. In the past, women avoided sexual intercourse and, as a result, pleasure due to fear of pregnancy. It appeared on the market in the 1960s, generating a lot of controversy. Nowadays, it has become something common and necessary in many cases.
Contraception and Its Benefits
Contraception was created to provide greater freedom for women when it comes to pregnancy. Many who do not want to become pregnant yet, or who simply want to regulate their cycle, use contraceptives in the form prescribed by a doctor. Pills, injections, patches, IUDs, implants and several others are up to 99% effective when used correctly. To be fully safe, you should always follow your doctor's advice.

The birth control pill is made with synthetic hormones (produced in laboratories) or natural hormones (extracted from other organisms). They are usually made with estrogen or progesterone as a base, along with a few other substances. These substances are:
Gestodene
Desogestrel
Cyproterone acetate
Drospirenone
Chlormadinone
Dienogest
Each of these substances has a specific role, so it is the doctor who will prescribe the most appropriate birth control pill for each person's body. Pills should be taken orally for 21 or 24 consecutive days (depending on the composition), followed by a seven-day break, resuming on the eighth day. The pill dosage also varies depending on the person.
That's why certain occurrences are not uncommon. Bleeding in the middle of the pill pack are spotting and can happen in any case of hormone use absorbed by the body. It's important to remember that whenever a woman has more than two instances of breakthrough bleeding in the same pack or cycle of birth control, she should talk to her doctor about the need to change her medication's formulation or increase the dosage.
Other forms of contraception are injections. They typically act in the same way as oral birth control, but as injectables, are not easily discontinued. They are based on estrogen or progesterone. They should be taken every month on the same day, or every three months, as is the case with Perlutan, which is appropriate for those who have recently given birth. In fact, women in the postpartum period should gradually resume contraception: if breastfeeding, use an appropriate method, and if not breastfeeding, use gentle formulas gradually.
Implants and patches are still new, but may be recommended because the risk of forgetting is low. However, they are still little used due to their high cost. The hormonal and copper IUDs are excellent contraceptive methods, and like the implant, require a gynecologist for insertion.
The morning-after pill is a relatively new option and should be used with great caution. It is equivalent to about a full pack of birth control pills. The morning-after pill is usually based on progesterone or levonorgestrel, a derivative of progesterone that prevents ovulation and, consequently, pregnancy. However, like all contraceptive methods, it is not 100% effective. Its effectiveness is increased if used within 12 to 48 hours after unprotected intercourse.
Withdrawal method is a less effective way to avoid pregnancy than contraceptives, but is still widely used by couples. It is not recommended because it can indeed result in a pregnancy, with higher chances than birth control. Generally, hormonal methods are 99% effective, while withdrawal is not even 30% effective. The pre-ejaculatory fluid released by the man during sex contains live and healthy sperm just like ejaculate. The quantity of these sperm is lower, which may explain the absence of pregnancy in most cases, but let's say it is risking an unwanted pregnancy too much.
The best contraceptive method should always be chosen together with a doctor. He or she can help with choosing the best pill and also with safe ways to prevent pregnancy. When in doubt, always talk to your gynecologist.
