Cesarean delivery is the solution for cases where the health condition of the mother and baby requires a quick delivery to remove them from any situation in which they are at risk of death. It is a complex surgery that subjects the woman to anesthesia and seven layers of skin and tissue incisions to deliver the baby.
What Are the Indications for a Cesarean?
Cesarean section has become the most common form of birth in recent times. More than 50% of births in Brazil are by cesarean section, but is it because of a medical reason or simply for convenience? Most cesarean procedures are performed by medical decision without consulting the patient, but many are by the mother’s own choice. But after all, what are the factors that indicate the need for a cesarean?

The cesarean procedure is relatively simple, but it is a surgery. The woman must refrain from drinking liquids and eating food for at least eight hours before the birth takes place. The patient is placed on a surgical table and receives spinal anesthesia. This anesthesia keeps the patient awake during the procedure so she can see the baby as soon as it is born.
The spinal block is given in the lower back, more specifically in the lumbar region, between the vertebrae of the spine until it reaches the spinal cord. Analgesia occurs from the waist down and leaves the legs immobile and numb. After the anesthesia is given, a catheter is placed in the bladder to collect any urine there and is only removed hours after the procedure.
During the cesarean section, the woman is monitored by machines that provide her with special support in cases of low or high blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygenation. After the baby is delivered, the doctors clean the uterus to remove any remaining placenta and tissue from the delivery. They then begin suturing, which can take up to 30 minutes, as there are seven layers of skin, muscle, and even the uterus itself.
Cesarean section is a safe way to deliver a baby, despite all the medication used before delivery and also the recovery that is slower than with a vaginal birth. The problem is that cesarean has become a kind of routine in hospitals and, for some doctors, convenience has outweighed the real need for the way the woman gives birth.
Recovery from surgical delivery is slower than normal birth, taking 20 to 40 days to be 100%, compared to one day for women who had vaginal delivery. In some cases, several medications are also recommended to prevent inflammation of the surgical stitches. But this applies to both types of birth if the woman has had an episiotomy.
The decision for a cesarean can also come from the woman’s own desire, for the convenience of knowing the place and time the baby will be born. In a way, this advantage has won over many women who have become fans of cesarean delivery. It is up to the doctor, together with the mother, to decide the best date for the delivery.
Going into labor to have a cesarean is also possible. Some women wait for the baby to give signs it wants to be born to schedule the surgery. This would be the least invasive way for the cesarean, as the baby decided the time of birth. Many women often choose this kind of delivery out of fear of pain or because of complications that have arisen during pregnancy.
Vaginal birth and cesarean section have already sparked many discussions. Natural birth advocates argue that not all health problems should result in a cesarean, but doctors still say that it is the best way to prevent greater risks for mother and baby. The key is to assess, case by case, the safety of the mother and child.
