If there is anything that truly keeps parents up at night, it is their children's health. But childhood diseases happen unexpectedly, sometimes without any apparent reason, and end up requiring much more care than we naturally and daily already provide.
Everyday Illnesses
Some diseases are part of a child's daily life. They usually affect children as soon as they come into contact with someone infected, for example, with the flu or colds. These are considered everyday illnesses and are easily managed if there are no complications. The period when the child tends to get sick more often is when they start being part of a group, like at school, for example. The good thing about this period is that the immunity acquired with these diseases lasts for life!

Some childhood diseases are beyond the control of medicine and unfortunately cannot be prevented, as is the case with autism, which can only be discovered when signs begin to appear as the child grows. Normally, these very characteristic signs appear by the age of 3. Suspicion usually begins when parents notice certain difficulties in their children, such as speech issues, social interaction, and even repetitive movements that lead them to seek medical help. Some children with the condition are able to live normal lives and achieve a lot of success in their professional careers.
For other diseases in children, there is treatment, as is the case with meningitis. It is an inflammation that affects the brain, the spinal cord, and parts of the nervous system. This is a highly dangerous infectious disease if not properly treated. Diagnosis is carried out through lumbar puncture to collect spinal fluid, which must be tested immediately. Treatment, if necessary, is done with antibiotics, and hospitalization is only required in the case of bacterial meningitis.
Another childhood disease that haunts children these days is diabetes. This involves a change in how the pancreas works, which is responsible for producing insulin in the body—a hormone that turns glucose from food into energy. Insufficient insulin to act on all the glucose received from food causes malaise, dizziness, and even fainting from weakness. Treatment is carried out with daily insulin injections along with monitoring.
Reflux, which is another on the list of children's diseases, may present itself either in the first days of life or later. Parents notice when their child spits up more frequently than normal. However, they should only start to be concerned if weight gain is affected or if feeding becomes problematic due to persistent reflux. The diagnosis is usually made by the child's pediatrician, who will prescribe specific medication to control the reflux if necessary.
One disease that is considered a nightmare for parents is childhood epilepsy. This condition appears as a neurological disorder and causes seizure episodes. It can be triggered by genetic problems, brain damage, or even metabolic disorders. As the electrical discharges during a seizure affect the neurons, it is common for the child to experience learning and daily development difficulties. Unfortunately, this childhood disease has no cure, but there are anticonvulsant treatments that help control it. Diagnosis is made through exams such as CT scan, MRI, electroencephalogram, and, if the specialist deems it necessary, genetic testing.
Another issue that, despite previously focusing mainly on adults, is now increasingly affecting children is childhood depression. The problem is growing daily due to family issues, excessive pressure from parents, too many responsibilities, and even financial problems. Children affected by this disease show poor academic performance, sadness, lack of appetite, insomnia or excessive sleep, and even suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The diagnosis should be carried out with the help of a psychologist, who will perform tests using drawings and play to assess the child. The treatment may include medications, but it is extremely important to have follow-up with a psychotherapist, along with support from parents and teachers.
