Disabled Children
All children with some physiological, psychological or anatomical abnormality are considered disabled children, resulting in difficulty moving, reasoning, or interacting socially. In some cases, the child may have more than one, thus being classified as having multiple disabilities.
  • Living with Differences

In a world where differences are so clear and abundant, very little is still known about how to deal with them. Thousands of children with some kind of physical disability suffer together with their families due to the difficulty of social inclusion and the right to come and go like any other citizen. What should be a right becomes a constant daily struggle for adaptation, and only by battling and insisting persistently do they achieve anything.

A child's disability is naturally an undesired experience for parents and may lead them to feel that they have to cope with this situation alone. However, public institutions, NGOs, and associations like AACD become their main allies and supporters when they feel lost, not knowing what to do or who to turn to. These organizations provide treatment and proper follow-up, specialized care, and in this way, manage to provide rehabilitation and habilitation for children with disabilities, offering social integration.

To achieve this integration, support from the government and city governments is essential. It is important to provide suitable access for the mobility of people with disabilities in public areas and in schools, giving children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in school life just like any other child. In addition to proper and adapted environments to receive children with disabilities, it is necessary to have trained professionals capable of working with, developing, and caring for special children. Inclusion is not only valuable for these children who need it so much, but for all people who should learn to respect differences and live with every one of them.

Disabled children need special care, including therapies such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy, to improve certain functions and maximize their independence within their abilities. In cases of a disability affecting speech, the speech therapist is extremely important in helping that child’s development. The work has to be continuous and gradually intensified over time as the child develops. Additionally, it is also advisable to do activities with these children among family members, as with the love and care of those around them, development will happen more quickly. Some organizations also do work with pets such as dogs, cats, or horses. Equine-assisted therapy helps children from those with cerebral palsy to those with some kind of social difficulty, such as children with autism.

Another very important issue faced by many parents and disabled children is the lack of transportation to reach their destination, whether it is to hospitals, schools, or even where they will receive treatment. Few are able to provide transport for all the children who need it. Unfortunately, public transport has very few buses adapted for people with disabilities and wheelchair users. The governments of some states provide services like Atende. This helps families in need who require some type of transportation. However, to be able to access this service, the first step is to register at the nearest Health Department.
