When a woman is healthy, her pregnancy is also likely to go well. The problem arises when certain diseases appear during pregnancy.
Diseases Originating from the Blood
Many problems and diseases that can occur during pregnancy originate from the woman's own blood. Typical issues include high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, which can affect not only the mother but also the fetus. That’s why it is recommended to have all necessary tests done as soon as possible to address these diseases properly.

Some diseases are serious and bring severe consequences to the health of the mother and the baby or may make it difficult for the pregnancy to reach full term at 39 weeks. Other diseases can be even more dangerous, putting the lives of both at risk. Still others are more common and only cause discomfort and little concern. But then, which are the diseases during pregnancy that require precautions and when should the doctor be more attentive to help manage and prevent them?
Some diseases during pregnancy mainly involve the blood, as in the case of gestational diabetes. Even women with no previous history may suffer from insulin resistance or a lack of production, leading to higher blood sugar levels. This excess, caused by metabolic changes during pregnancy, can cause increased fetal growth and problems after birth. Detection is done through routine prenatal blood tests and, if the disease is diagnosed, it can be controlled by changing dietary habits.
Nutrients are essential for both the pregnant woman and the baby. During pregnancy, the baby takes everything needed to grow strong and healthy from the mother's body, so sometimes iron may be one of the nutrients that is low for the woman at this stage, causing anemia in pregnancy. Anemia is one of the most common diseases in pregnancy and is not as risky as gestational diabetes and hypertension, but it can contribute to a mother feeling unwell and may eventually lead to problems during labor, such as hemorrhage due to low iron. The obstetrician will recommend a diet rich in iron as well as supplements like ferrous sulfate until the end of pregnancy.
Another pregnancy-related disease involving the blood is high blood pressure, which is among the dangerous diseases during pregnancy. Sometimes it is silent and women might not realize their blood pressure isn't at the ideal level, 120/80 mmHg or lower. Readings of 140/80 mmHg cause a warning for the doctor, but before making a diagnosis, the doctor should monitor blood pressure daily, not only in the clinic. Women over 35, those with obesity, diabetes, or emotional issues may develop hypertension during pregnancy, though DHEG can simply occur without any other determining factor. The biggest risk of hypertension in pregnancy is pre-eclampsia, a disease that can lead to multiple organ failure in both mother and baby if blood pressure is not controlled.
Thyroid problems are common among pregnant women. Hormonal fluctuations are normal, but thyroid disorders may become complicated due to limited treatment options. Women with hormone disorders such as with T3 and T4 hormones may experience a significant increase in problems caused by dysregulation of these principal body hormones during pregnancy. Because of these changes, the woman may have excessive weight gain, body aches, and even impaired fetal growth. It is important to keep these hormones under control through diet and medication during pregnancy.
Vaginitis can occur even in women who are not pregnant, but due to reduced immunity it becomes one of the more frequent diseases during pregnancy. Vaginitis occurs because of an overgrowth of the natural bacteria and fungi of the vaginal flora. This proliferation happens because pregnancy lowers the body’s immunity. This disease during pregnancy can cause itching, burning, and discharge, but is easily treated. Medications such as gynecological creams containing antifungals and nystatin can treat vaginitis efficiently. To prevent this disease, it is important to maintain a good diet and regular physical activity that help regulate body immunity.
Depression is one of the diseases that may appear during pregnancy. With hormonal changes, mood swings become a vulnerability for pregnant women. This disease in pregnancy can cause problems such as loss of appetite, lack of motivation to attend necessary exams, and even low self-esteem. When depression during pregnancy is severe, doctors may intervene with mild medication to lessen the symptoms, but this treatment may extend after birth.
Placental abruption or gestational sac detachment technically is not a disease of pregnancy, but rather a condition that affects the mother and puts both her and the fetus at risk. Early in pregnancy, separation of the sac can occur, causing edema that is usually resolved easily with medication and rest. In the case of the placenta, however, it can lead to preterm labor if it cannot be reversed with treatment.
Hyperemesis gravidarum is characterized by excessive vomiting and nausea during pregnancy. This is a disease exclusive to pregnancy and can affect fetal growth and, above all, the mother’s well-being. Hyperemesis gravidarum can cause severe dehydration in the pregnant woman and lead to damage to the liver and gastrointestinal organs.
