Many women believe that by taking medications for those who want to get pregnant, also known as ovulation inducers, their dream will come true instantly; however, they are not aware that the medication itself will not make them pregnant, it will treat the problem that is preventing fertilization. Along with the medication, couples who wish to conceive should also adopt a healthier lifestyle, such as healthy eating, exercising, and avoiding alcohol and cigarettes1.

Using Medications To Get Pregnant

Remember that the use of this type of medication should not be a choice but rather done by recommendation from a specialist and it will not always bring the expected result. Each body will react differently to medications and they may or may not result in pregnancy.

Doctors recommend the use of fertility medications for women who have irregular ovulation or who do not ovulate at all. Obviously, this is after investigating the couple: for the woman, with ultrasounds to check for tubal blockage, and for the man, a semen analysis (spermogram) to check semen quality.

Focus of Medications To Get Pregnant

The objective of these medications is to improve the quality and quantity of eggs, being a careful and considered process by the specialist, because obtaining a lot of eggs brings a risk of multiple pregnancies—twins, triplets, etc. Medications for getting pregnant are also indicated for couples who have been trying for over a year without being able to conceive naturally.

Side Effects

The most well-known ovulation inducers can be taken orally or via injection. Like any medication, these can cause side effects such as:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Irritability
  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation

In some cases, when treatment with fertility drugs does not bring the expected result, infertility can only be reversed through surgery or even by turning to assisted reproduction methods, such as intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization. Infertility can be caused by several factors:

For Women: Anatomical, immunological, and cases of endometriosis. Hormonal changes, amenorrhea (periods without menstruation), lack of ovulation or ovulation of immature or malformed eggs.

Men: Total or partial absence of sperm, or changes in the shape or quantity of sperm seen in a spermogram. The diagnosis in men is easier to carry out, so it is advised by specialists that the man is investigated before starting treatment with the woman.

For any type of treatment for infertility problems2, the couple should see a specialist in Assisted Medicinal Reproduction, as these professionals can offer greater support for women trying to become pregnant, with or without the use of fertility drugs.

The pros and cons of using fertility medications3 should be weighed with the supervising doctor. In some cases where the woman ovulates naturally or when infertility has no apparent cause, strong medications such as those used for induction may not be needed. Other supplements, such as vitamins and herbal teas, can have a very positive effect and have the benefit of not being medications for pregnancy, but rather a helping hand from nature.
