Many couples try to get pregnant for years on end before discovering that they have some kind of serious fertility problem, or for another major reason, and need help to achieve pregnancy. In vitro fertilization has evolved over the years and is becoming increasingly popular among couples who need a helping hand from medicine.
Who Can Undergo In Vitro Fertilization
Who can turn to in vitro fertilization? In which situations can it help a couple have a biological child? Undergoing In Vitro Fertilization is very simple these days, as long as the couple can afford a good fertility specialist or signs up for free programs to perform IVF. But who can apply for fertilization?
In vitro fertilization involves making the fertilization of male and female gametes in a laboratory environment. Everything starts with a visit to a fertility specialist doctor. They will examine the couple and, after confirming that this procedure is the most viable solution, will begin to prepare everything for it to happen. Some exams, like Anti-Müllerian and sperm analysis, are performed to determine the quality of the couple's reproductive material.
Next, the doctor begins administering medication to the woman. This will induce ovulation so that there are eggs available to use. Most of the time, the medication used is injectable for the IVF procedure, as its abbreviation is known. She will have some abdominal stimulatory injections based on hormones. This process lasts five to ten days. At the end of the medication, several follicles should develop, among them several dominant ones. There may be 2 to 12, and all are aspirated at the right moment when they are mature.
At this point, the doctor also helps with medication. He will prescribe appropriate medication to assist follicle maturation, or if there is one at a very advanced stage, the medication will be used to hold this early maturation until the perfect day for retrieval.
After the eggs are aspirated, they are taken to the fertilization laboratory. At this stage, the husband's semen is also available, which will be analyzed. The best sperm, in terms of motility, anatomy, and health, will be selected for in vitro fertilization. Fertilization actually occurs, and after 5 days the best embryos are transferred. Normally, doctors choose to transfer up to a maximum of 3 embryos at a time.
The risk of twin pregnancy in IVF is much higher than in a natural pregnancy. Therefore, safety must prevail. We know that the uterus was not designed for multiple pregnancies, and with more than three babies, the pregnancy is seriously at risk depending on the woman's age and health. After the in vitro fertilization procedure, the woman continues on progesterone-based medication to help keep the endometrium receptive to pregnancy. Twelve days after the procedure, a beta HCG test can already be performed to check if insemination was successful.
Not all fertilizations are successful on the first attempt. This is why remaining embryos that are on standby can be frozen for future transfer. If pregnancy does not occur on the first try, the doctor will redo the process of preparing the uterus for a new transfer.
If this also does not work, the couple can keep trying as long as they have resources, as there is no maximum number of fertilizations that can be done. It is only advised that the couple allow the woman's body some rest. The amount of hormones injected and ingested in the body is very large and can cause problems if done continuously over several cycles.
The chance of success for couples with no apparent problems is much greater on the first attempt. In fact, the first IVF is considered the golden chance! Women between 30 and 35 years old have the greatest chance of becoming pregnant on the first try. Over 40, a woman has only 25% of the chance she had at 30. That’s why these patients are closely monitored by the fertility specialist.
Pregnancy through fertilization has become the solution for so many couples. Through IVF, they can fulfill the dream of having a biological child, even after 40 or with some serious problem that prevents a natural pregnancy.
