To ensure full health, we need healthy habits, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet. But when it comes to motherhood, these precautions must be even greater. Above all, nutrition during pregnancy is extremely important for the best fetal development and to maintain the mother's good health.
Adjustment of Eating Habits During Pregnancy
To foster a healthy life growing in your belly, it is often necessary to adapt your diet. Certain factors and substances can have negative effects on fetal development. To ensure the physical and psychological integrity of both mother and child you need to avoid some foods, take supplements, and sometimes even reduce weight.

Including foods rich in proteins, vitamins, and iron is recommended to provide the necessary daily intake of these nutrients, which will directly support the healthy development of the body, bones, organs, and also the brain of the fetus. That’s why, right at the first prenatal appointment, the obstetrician usually recommends the use of multivitamins to compensate for a possible lack in the diet, which, especially in the first trimester, tends to be restricted because of difficulty eating and morning sickness.
It is necessary to have control over your diet during pregnancy, avoiding fried and fatty foods and reducing the amount of sugar. This way it is possible to gain weight healthily, within the recommended limit, which is 12 kilos for the entire pregnancy. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, orange, apple, carrot, tomato, kale, and broccoli are great sources of nutrients. Meals based on plant proteins like rice, beans, and wheat, accompanied by lean meats like chicken or turkey, should be part of the regular diet during pregnancy.
Milk derivatives such as cheese and yogurt should also be included in the daily diet, as they are rich in calcium and other nutrients. Calcium is responsible for the development of the fetus’s bones and teeth, in addition to meeting the mother’s vitamin needs.
Some foods are not recommended during pregnancy as they pose risks to the health of the mother and baby, such as certain seafood. Dishes and meals made with raw fish and shellfish should be excluded from the diet during pregnancy because they pose a risk of contamination with toxoplasmosis. This disease can cause serious harm to the fetus such as blindness and brain damage.
Unpasteurized cheeses and milk, sausages, and processed meats should also be removed from the pregnancy diet list, as they present a risk of contamination by Listeria bacteria, which is a cause of spontaneous abortion, premature birth, and fatal illnesses in babies. Another food that can be harmful due to its preparation is eggs; when eaten raw or undercooked, they can cause salmonella contamination.
Alcoholic beverages should be avoided during pregnancy, as they present a risk of harm to the fetus, including potential intellectual disability. Caffeine found in coffee, chocolate, and cola-based soft drinks should also be reduced, as excessive intake can cause premature birth or affect the fetus's weight gain, leading to low birth weight.
