The ovaries are an important part of female fertility. It is there that eggs are stimulated so that fertilization and consequently, pregnancy can occur. But the problem arises when the ovaries are affected by a collection of persistent eggs. This problem is called polycystic ovaries.
Women with Polycystic Ovaries Can Also Get Pregnant
There is a lot of talk about the difficulty for women with polycystic ovaries to get pregnant. It is true that those who suffer from this condition may take much longer to achieve the dream of motherhood than other women. However, if treated, the problem can be minimized and thus make it easier for a woman to become pregnant. There are various treatments available, but the most common are medication-based.

A polycystic ovary may be an isolated case, occurring just once during a woman's fertile years, but it can also be a syndrome. So what is a polycystic ovary? The ovary stimulates about 10 to 15 eggs at a time when it is in an ovulatory cycle. Some of these develop to form a dominant follicle and others are potential candidates to mature.
When ovulation occurs, these smaller follicles regress until they completely dissolve by the time menstruation happens. The problem begins when these follicles do not dissolve. They become a sort of scar tissue that interrupts the growth of more healthy follicles until the stage where they would mature to be released and fertilized.
The cause of polycystic ovaries is hormonal imbalance. The deregulation of estrogen, FSH, and progesterone combined with low LH levels leads to their presence. The increase in androgen hormones such as testosterone and sometimes estrogen results in very long cycles of 60, 70, or 120 days in women. Some may even go an entire year without menstruating. When only one hormone dominates the cycle and does not allow the others to reach their peak, this can result in anovulatory cycles, which consequently prevents menstruation and pregnancy.
The following symptoms of polycystic ovaries are common among many women with the disease, whether temporary or permanent as in the case of those with the syndrome (PCOS):
Absence or irregular menstrual periods
Appearance of pimples
Weight gain
Appearance of thick body hair
Very oily skin
Hair loss
Women with PCOS suffer twice as much with this problem because it is recurrent. Just as one treatment cycle ends and there might be a chance to become pregnant, the problem can return. But do polycystic ovaries have a cure? No, but they can be managed. Keeping the ovaries functioning normally may help pregnancy occur without major issues. For this, the woman must maintain absolute and rigorous control over the condition together with her gynecologist.
Successful pregnancy cases even with polycystic ovaries are increasing every day, because treatments are becoming more advanced. It was recently discovered that cysts dissolve with the use of Metformin. Most doctors started adopting this treatment method due to its effectiveness, some in combination with other hormonal medications such as Cicloprimogyna. However, the traditional treatment for polycystic ovaries is still mainly based on contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol and cyproterone acetate. For women who wish to become pregnant, it is also common to use ovulation inducers, but this is only recommended after properly addressing the problem, as stimulating ovulation may worsen the condition of the ovaries.
