Postpartum, or the puerperium as the period following the baby’s birth is known, is a delicate moment marked by sudden changes in a woman's body. The organs will quickly return to their proper places, and the female genitalia will recover from the changes that occurred during pregnancy, especially if she had a vaginal birth.
Puerperium Emotions
The puerperium is a delicate phase for any woman. The wave of emotions that invades this phase is immense and will certainly catch her by surprise if she has never been through childbirth before. Sadness, baby blues, depression, and hormonal changes are the main causes for concern regarding the emotions of the puerperium.

A healthy diet rich in fiber, protein, and plenty of fluids is essential for women after childbirth to manage all tasks. The body is performing many functions, from returning to normal weight, producing milk, and helping organs go back to their proper place. If the woman does not follow the recommended postpartum diet, besides affecting milk production, the baby may also suffer from colic caused by poor maternal nutrition.
Postpartum women should maintain their hygiene naturally, including washing their hair, and there is no need for any special breast care. Since a woman spends on average 45 to 56 days experiencing postpartum bleeding, using a genital pad is extremely important and must be changed frequently to avoid leaks, unpleasant odor, and possible infections. Postpartum menstruation may take several months to return. It usually happens when the woman stops exclusive breastfeeding and comes back irregularly and with a darker color, lasting around 6 to 8 days.
The use of clothing in the postpartum should be as usual, aiming for comfort. Rely on supportive bras that better sustain the breasts, preventing excessive skin stretching that causes sagging, since at this stage the breasts will double in size due to high milk production.
Support belts can be used to help the body return more quickly, as well as provide more security in the first few days since the belly tends to be soft while the organs return to their places. Remember that postpartum belts should be used to compress the abdomen and make the woman feel safer, not to cause pain or discomfort. In some cases, such as in cesarean sections with an infected scar that needs to be aired, belts are not recommended. The belt traps moisture and impedes healing, making the situation even worse.
The healthy habits acquired throughout pregnancy should also be maintained during this postpartum recovery period, including the recommendation that the mother stay away from alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs, especially if breastfeeding. The recovery period should last 30 to 40 days, avoiding physical efforts, driving, lifting weight, and having sexual relations. The body is still returning to normal and any sudden movement may cause pain, and the area where the placenta was is still healing and at risk for infections.
Right after delivery, the woman is at risk of developing symptoms of sadness and irritability that can indicate postpartum depression. These symptoms do not go away on their own and tend to worsen over time, causing feelings of incompetence, constant crying, and lack of patience with the baby, affecting her ability to care for the child. If these signs are observed, the gynecologist should be informed so that treatment can be started if necessary.
