Pregnancy Test
Pregnancy tests are the main allies of those trying to conceive. A woman might suspect she is pregnant as soon as her period is late and then, the pregnancy test comes into play. They can be as practical as pharmacy tests, and as reliable as blood tests.

Pregnancy Test Even Before Your Period Is Late

Haste makes waste! That’s why waiting for your period to be late before taking the much-anticipated test is the best way to avoid disappointment. Few women get a positive result even before their period is late; they are the exception, not the rule. So if your friend got a positive before her period was late, don’t be misled. Wait for your period to be late before taking a test.

Most pregnancy tests can be done as soon as your period is late, however, it is recommended to take it from the 5th day of missed period for regular cycles and the 20th day after supposed ovulation in women with irregular cycles.

The tests that are currently being used the most, thanks to their ease of use, storage, and good quality, are pharmacy pregnancy tests. They cost an average of R$10 and are sold at any pharmacy or drugstore without the need for a doctor's order or prescription. They are effective, as they detect small amounts of HCG (the hormone exclusive to pregnancy) in the woman's body.

They are done with urine collected in a cup and give a result in about five minutes. There are various brands, and sensitivities range between 10mUI and 25mUI. Pharmacy tests are sold in pen versions — these have cases that protect the test strip. But the simplest tests, like the single strip ones, also give reliable results. Brands have both versions to suit all budgets.

The most common pregnancy test is the beta HCG. This is the most reliable of all since it should be performed in laboratories using the woman's blood serum. Fasting is not required, and just a few drops of serum are enough to determine a positive or negative result. There are two types of blood pregnancy tests: quantitative and qualitative beta HCG.

The quantitative beta HCG measures the amount of HCG per mUI of blood, that is, it determines whether there is enough for a healthy pregnancy. The qualitative beta HCG only detects the presence of this pregnancy hormone. The blood pregnancy test can be performed shortly after a missed period, as soon as there is already HCG in the blood, which may reveal a value above the negative threshold, which runs from below 0 up to 5.0 mUI.

Some laboratories use more sensitive methods for pregnancy testing than others. The method they use may consider values above 25mUi as positive in the blood, while in others, only values greater than 50mUi would be considered positive.

The cost of the blood pregnancy test may vary from city to city; however, it is around R$80 and the vast majority of laboratories require a doctor's request for the test.

If the pregnancy test is negative, it is advised that the woman take it again in a week if the missed period persists, since there are cases where pregnancy occurs later than expected and only after implantation is HCG produced.

As with the blood pregnancy test, the pharmacy test should be repeated after a few days to check for the presence of HCG after a few days. HCG often doubles in quantity within up to 60 hours. Don't forget, pregnancy tests can be taken at home with the first urine of the day (which has the highest concentration of HCG), or they can be done in the lab without fasting. The pregnancy test can be inaccurate if the woman takes it too soon before the missed period or if there is late ovulation.

If the pregnancy test is negative and menstruation still does not appear, the test should be repeated in a few days, and if the answer is still negative, the woman should make an appointment with a gynecologist to investigate the reason for the missed period.
