When you become pregnant with the second child, the older sibling waits anxiously for the arrival of the newest family member. They take part in preparing everything, from the layette to the nursery. Some do not miss a single prenatal check-up or ultrasound. Others tend to get jealous even while the youngest is still in the belly, thinking their place will be taken as soon as the baby is born.
The reaction of an older sibling to the birth of a new one is not always the same. Each child has their own unique way of reacting and expressing themselves to this new development, often presenting regression issues. They want to breastfeed again, wear diapers, and even wet their pants. Others react by becoming more responsible with the arrival of the new sibling and want to enjoy every moment, taking part in caring, bathing, and changing clothes.
Many parents dream of a full house, a big family, already imagining everyone growing up together and, when they are adults, having each other. They also consider the benefits of not having an only child, because some people believe that too much care and attention may be harmful to a child's upbringing.
Others strive to provide the best for their child, and due to the busy daily routines of parents nowadays, as well as the cost of schools, health, clothing, and food, they end up deciding not to give their child a younger sibling, thus offering the only child the best they can.
There are couples who, years after the oldest child is born, decide to become pregnant again. Because the oldest child is already more mature, for some it may be easier to manage the upbringing of both. But this point of view is divided, as some believe the age gap can actually generate even more difficulties and fights between siblings due to their different life stages.
Sibling rivalry is present in every household, whether it is a home with siblings of the opposite sex, twins, siblings with a small age difference or a large one. Complicated situations can also develop when living together in blended families with half-siblings or even in patchwork families. The important thing is for parents to know how to handle this often stressful situation. Showing and teaching children that they should respect each other's differences and opinions, and above all, preserve each individual's space.
