Throughout the 9 months of pregnancy, extremely important exams are needed to evaluate the health of both the woman and the baby. The most well-known and memorable for expecting mothers is certainly the ultrasound.
How Many Ultrasounds to Have During Pregnancy
Ultrasounds are among the most interesting and exciting moments for every pregnant woman. Doctors recommend having one scan per month starting from the end of the second month. With each visit to the obstetrician, the anxiety grows and so does the curiosity to see how visible the fetus has become, which organs have formed, whether it is moving, and of course, its sex.
As I always say, once the anxiety of trying to get...

Ultrasound during pregnancy, also known as sonography, is an exam that is initially considered to have no contraindications, but it should not be overused since some studies suggest caution due to the emission of energy. During the ultrasound exam, the device uses sound waves to capture images of the fetus, uterus, and placenta. In addition to images, it can also capture internal sounds, including the fetal heartbeat.
Although ultrasound is one of the main ways for parents to find out the baby's sex, ultrasound during pregnancy goes far beyond that. It is possible to monitor fetal development and verify measurements, weight, and also the amount of amniotic fluid. You can also see the baby's features in advance through a 4D ultrasound.
In the first trimester, pregnancy ultrasound is performed to check the fetal heartbeat, visualize the gestational sac, and determine gestational age. In some cases, when done very early, before 7 weeks, the ultrasound does not show any details and the heartbeat may not be heard.
It is also indicated to rule out a possible ectopic pregnancy, which happens when the embryo begins to develop outside the uterus or in the case of a molar pregnancy. The ultrasound can show an abnormal placenta and an irregular embryo.
Since it is able to visualize all pregnancy-related details, the ultrasound can determine whether more than one embryo is present. In the case of multiple pregnancy, with more than two or three fetuses, it is possible to see each baby or each gestational sac in detail.
Between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, a new ultrasound will be requested. This is called the nuchal translucency scan, which measures the skin fold at the back of the neck and checks for the presence of the nasal bone. This ultrasound can detect genetic issues, such as Down syndrome. If any changes or suspicions are found during the ultrasound, the obstetrician may order further tests for confirmation, such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis.
As pregnancy enters the second trimester, the most detailed ultrasound is required. The morphological ultrasound is done around 20 weeks of gestation. It is usually during this scan that the baby's sex can be seen. Throughout the procedure, the baby's heart is checked, as well as brain development, the digestive system, and the baby's entire body is measured to assess growth.
During this ultrasound exam, the position of the placenta is also monitored, as it might be covering the opening of the cervix. If so, this must be followed in future ultrasounds to see if the placenta moves before the birth.
The obstetrician may request a morphological ultrasound with Doppler, which is a specialized system that can show blood flow in the uterus, the baby, and the placenta. Usually, you can tell one exam from the other because the Doppler uses red and blue to indicate blood flow. In the third trimester, ultrasound mainly serves to monitor the baby’s growth, the amount of amniotic fluid, the baby's position, as well as the degree of placenta maturation.
The purpose of ultrasound during pregnancy is to detect possible developmental, genetic, or cardiac issues, as well as to monitor the proper development of the fetus. If any problem is detected, suitable treatment can start immediately while the baby is still in the womb. If treatment cannot be provided during pregnancy, it can be planned to start at birth, so the baby has the best chances for life and care.
