Brazil reaches peak levels during the pandemic
July 2020, study by Trocando Fraldas with over 7,500 women between July 27 and 28, 2020: Brazil remains the second country in the world with the highest number of deaths from coronavirus. It is only behind the United States, the country with the highest number of deaths so far, as shown by the Johns Hopkins University global dashboard.
With the continued rise in cases in recent months, the population is increasingly concerned and has been changing their minds about the reopening of the country's economy. In our most recent study, we found that 60% of Brazilians do not agree with reopening the country. In the previous study, conducted in June, 65% were not in favor. In the May study, more than half, 54%, wanted the economy to reopen as soon as possible.
Do you agree with reopening most of the country?
Reopening the Country
Comparing with previous studies, young people between 18 and 24 years old were among those who most wanted the country to reopen. Now, in the new study, we found the percentage rose from 34% in the previous study to 41%.

- Among people aged 50 or older, the percentage also rose. 34% were in favor in the previous study, now 38%.
- Previously, women wanted the reopening less than men, 43% men and 35% women. In the new study, the percentage is close between them, 43% men and 40% women.
Behavior of others is displeasing
The study also found that 57% of Brazilians consider others' behavior to be inadequate. Lack of caution puts the most vulnerable and susceptible people at risk. As a result of carelessness and other factors, the number of cases continues to rise.
Do you consider the behavior of people around you to be adequate to avoid more cases?
- Even though São Paulo is the state with the highest number of deaths, 43% of participants agree that people are behaving appropriately during the pandemic. This percentage rose 1% compared to the previous study.
- In Rio de Janeiro, in the previous study, 40% approved of others' behavior regarding prevention. The new study found that this increased to 43%.
- In Roraima, Amazonas and Alagoas the population is divided, and half agree with people's behavior.
- The state that least agrees with the behavior adopted by others is Amapá, with 66% of participants.
Infected by state
- In Roraima, 85% of respondents know someone who has or had coronavirus. In the previous study, the percentage was 81%.
- In Rio de Janeiro, 62% of participants know someone who has already had it, up from 59% in the last study.
- In São Paulo, at least half the population knows someone who has been infected.
- In Rio Grande do Sul, in the previous study only 23% of the population knew someone who had contracted the virus. In the new study, the percentage has risen to 46%.
- Across all states, 3 out of every 5 participants know someone who has been infected by Covid-19. And these percentages continue to grow with each passing month.
Percentage of Brazilians who know someone already infected with Covid-19
- As previously mentioned, the number of people who agree with the country's reopening had drastically dropped in the June study and has now risen from 35% to 40%.
- In São Paulo, the state with the highest number of deaths, and Rio de Janeiro, the second highest, at least 39% of the population agrees with reopening the country.
- Even though Ceará is one of the states with the most virus-related deaths, 52% of participants agree with reopening.
- In Pará, another state heavily affected by the virus, only 38% support this economic reopening.

Research Methodology
The study had national scope and was conducted with over 7,500 people from July 27 to 28, 2020. The data was collected via an online questionnaire.
The following questions were addressed:
- In which state do you live?
- How old are you?
- Are you female or male?
- Do you know someone who has contracted coronavirus?
- Do you consider the behavior of people around you adequate to avoid more cases?
- Do you agree with reopening most of the country?
To compare the results between regions and states, the answers to yes/no questions were converted to numbers, 1 for "yes" and 0 for "no". Some questions, with the aim of obtaining more qualitative results, were developed with additional options.
