Fetal development at 12 weeks pregnant is in full swing. Your baby’s tiny fingers and toes are beginning to form, as are the nails. Hair begins to appear as a soft fuzz. At this point, your baby measures about 5.4 cm from head to bottom and weighs on average 58 grams.
The genital organ is becoming ever more well-formed1 and is increasingly visible through ultrasound. The fetus is moving nonstop and seems to be playing in an amusement park, turning from one side to the other, swimming away. If you’re lucky, you might catch these movements during your ultrasound!
What Develops in Baby This Week
At 12 weeks pregnant, the appearance of your baby’s head, previously so out of proportion to the rest of the body, now slows its growth for a bit. Now the body is starting to gain weight and each day looks a bit more like the baby who’ll soon arrive in your life.
This is the recommended time for the nuchal translucency scan. This test analyses the folds on the baby’s neck. It can detect malformations and genetic diseases2, such as Down syndrome. You may already get an idea of the sex. If you have a good doctor and a good view of the baby, you may even get a guess about the sex using the genital tubercle. Will it be a boy or a girl?
How Mom is Feeling
In the 12th week, the risk of miscarriage still exists. However, the most critical phase of pregnancy has just ended and parents can relax. Sexual routine may have changed in recent months, but know that if your pregnancy is normal and low risk, it’s very healthy to make love with your partner!

You will feel even more energetic than the previous week and be in great spirits. Enjoy spending time with friends, going for a nice outing, or perhaps spending a day at the salon to pamper yourself. After all, just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t take care of yourself, right?
External Factors
Now that you are starting the second trimester, it’s the most enjoyable phase of pregnancy. You’ll be more energetic than ever, your mood will have improved. Your hair may have a special shine due to hormone levels.
Your bump isn’t big yet, but with slightly tighter clothes, you can notice the small curve. It’s so nice when someone notices it without you having to say anything! Take advantage of this energy to take care of yourself, eat healthily, do light exercise. These will help you stay in shape even during pregnancy. Keeping your weight gain in check is a great way to avoid post-partum stress about your weight.
