At 15 weeks pregnant, your baby may measure 10.1 cm and weigh about 70 grams. They can already perceive light through the skin. It sounds funny, but it’s true! The sensation is similar to when we close our eyes and still see light through our eyelids. The taste buds begin to form and the legs are growing bigger than their arms.
Baby’s Development
At this stage, around 15 weeks, it becomes easier to identify if it’s a boy or a girl, because development is very fast. The fetal genital tubercle is almost fully formed and guesses about the sex can be made during the ultrasound1. The joints are fully developed, which allows the baby to move from side to side without stopping and to change position as many times as they want, since there is still plenty of room.
At 15 weeks pregnant, your baby’s fingers are already formed and separated and the baby is able to suck, especially the thumb. This scene can sometimes be seen during the ultrasound if you’re lucky, as well as the baby playing with their tiny little foot. At this stage, it’s natural for the baby to start having hiccups2, but it’s almost impossible for mom to feel it yet.
How Mom Is Feeling…
At this stage, most moms already have a very prominent bump compared to previous weeks. In fact, from now on, the bump will get more noticeable every day. Whenever you go somewhere, your pregnancy rights should be respected and guaranteed. This should be the case since your positive test, of course, but with a bigger bump it’s easier and less awkward for people to notice and do their part.
Pain in Mom
At 15 weeks pregnant, some women begin to experience pelvic, side, and back pain. This can be alarming but is actually very normal3, as the muscles are loosening to allow the belly to stretch and the uterus to expand. The stretching of the uterus varies in pain intensity—for some women it hurts more and for others less.
The baby may move a lot, like a little fish in water. Even when still, the baby causes a different sensation. Know that your baby is very active at this stage due to the intense fetal development. Moms who are pregnant for a second time (or more) tend to feel their babies much earlier than first-time moms, since the initial sensation of movement is very subtle. Oh, and your regular clothes are getting tighter and weirder at this stage.
It might be time to update your wardrobe with maternity pieces or even just looser clothing, like dresses and tunics, which you can use even after the baby is born. At 15 weeks pregnant, your body is already quite different, and your bump is noticeably prominent. You look like a mom!
External Factors…
You are living the best moment of your life, and even with discomfort and pain, it’s all worth it when you hear that tiny heart beating quickly during a prenatal appointment, saying, “I’m here and beating because of you.” Being a mother is incredible and, after overcoming 9 months of total transformation, it’s all worth it!!
