More information about 17 weeks pregnant
At 17 weeks pregnant, your baby may measure 13 cm and weigh about 140 grams. That’s huge considering they started as just two cells. The production of vernix now begins—a white, natural “ointment” that protects your baby’s skin from the amniotic fluid1.
Vernix also helps your baby travel through the birth canal during delivery. Your baby is starting to get chubbier because now, at 17 weeks pregnant, growth slows down and weight gain becomes more intense thanks to fetal development being in full swing!
What develops in the baby this week?
The accumulation of body fat this week is an important milestone, as it will allow your baby to maintain their body heat. At 17 weeks, your baby’s lungs are already formed. They already have a trachea, bronchioles, and bronchi, but normal breathing is not possible yet because alveoli still need to form2.
Their first teeth are starting to appear in the jaw bone, and this week calcium is more than necessary for your baby’s best development. At this stage, calcium will be used to strengthen their bones and teeth3. Your baby at 17 weeks pregnant is moving nonstop, but you may not always feel it, especially if this is your first pregnancy. But soon you’ll feel butterflies flapping their wings inside your belly, and this will be the first sign of many kicks and somersaults your baby will do inside you.
How mom is feeling
To enjoy this delightful phase of your life, now with morning sickness gone and hormones sky high, at 17 weeks pregnant your baby bump is already showing and it’s easier to claim priority in lines. Although all pregnant women have this right from the very beginning, many moms are hesitant to exercise it.
At this phase of development, at 17 weeks pregnant, it may be easier to notice some of your baby’s movements. This, however, is relative and depends on your baby’s position inside the womb. If you need to have an amniocentesis, this is the ideal phase. This test detects the chromosome responsible for malformations such as Down syndrome, for example.
Mom’s pains
At this stage, pelvic pains might start appearing. Or if you’ve already been feeling uncomfortable, it may get more intense. At this stage, your uterus is expanding, your ligaments are opening up to allow the baby to pass through and make room for the uterus.
As mentioned on other occasions, your organs are rearranging inside the pregnant body, which can cause some discomfort due to fetal development now at 17 weeks. Some moms may feel toothaches or even bleeding gums. This is normal as blood flow in the vessels intensifies. It’s best to see a dentist and follow the given advice.
A very common symptom that may start at 17 weeks is heartburn. This symptom has long been linked to how much hair your baby will have, but believe it or not, that is just a myth and no real link has been found. Hot flashes are also common throughout the day, and this feeling is due to increased progesterone in your body.
External factors
At 17 weeks pregnant, this might be one of the most enjoyable phases of pregnancy. Now, nausea has subsided, excessive sleepiness is no longer a big annoyance, and you feel more energetic. And best of all, you feel beautiful and special.
Enjoy this time to take care of your skin, your hair, or to look for an exercise that is recommended during pregnancy. In addition to preparing you for delivery, it will be good for your physical and mental health and will help you control weight gain.
