More information about 20 Weeks Pregnant
At 20 weeks pregnant, your baby measures about 16.4 cm and weighs around 300 grams. Mom’s uterus now reaches the level of the belly button, due to fetal development, and know that now it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated!
For a healthy pregnancy, around 2 liters of fluids per day are recommended. Water, coconut water or natural juices, for example. At 20 weeks pregnant, the amount of vernix increases greatly to protect the baby.
Baby’s Development
Your baby’s previously pink skin is getting a new color and becoming a bit more reddish. The tiny hairs that began growing last week are now noticeable and may grow much more by birth. Arms, legs, hands and fingers are fully formed and the stage is to gain weight and grow. In the 20-week ultrasound, you can see your baby looking chubbier.
The internal organs are developing rapidly during this period, but the lungs are not yet functional1. At 20 weeks, the baby begins to swallow more amniotic fluid than before. This is because it is doing intensive training for its digestive system.
Another important milestone at week 20 is the beginning of meconium production in the baby’s intestines2. Meconium is formed from an accumulation of intestinal secretions and amniotic fluid and will be released soon after birth.
The baby is very active inside the womb and when not sleeping is moving all around. During the ultrasound you can watch a true session of play and jumps inside the womb, including little hands touching the face and even playful antics with the umbilical cord.
How Mom is Feeling…
At 20 weeks pregnant, you have probably already gained around 4 to 6 kilos and are eating every 3 hours , preferring foods rich in calcium and vitamins such as white cheese, yogurt, cereal bars, fruits, and juices. Half the pregnancy is over! Now, it’s not long until you meet the greatest love in the world!
In the 20th week, the growth of your belly, which before was taking time to show, accelerates and it starts getting bigger and rounder every day. With this growth it’s natural for some discomforts to begin. Bathroom trips become more frequent due to the weight on the bladder3 and shortness of breath is one of the most evident symptoms at this stage. Tell your doctor if you are having excessive difficulty breathing!
Mom’s Discomforts
At 20 weeks, another very common symptom is heartburn. So it is best to avoid fatty or acidic foods, as they can further increase the discomfort. A tip is to eat or drink very cold things because they give a sense of relief for the symptom. At this stage, your belly button begins to stick out more and that’s due to the growth of your belly and stretching of the skin. By the end of pregnancy, your belly button may be completely turned out, but this will go back to normal after your baby is born. Everything will return to normal, don’t worry.
External Factors…
Your belly is super evident this week and people begin to notice your pregnancy. Take advantage of the fact that the weight is not too uncomfortable yet and go for walks and do light exercises. In addition to helping control weight gain, which is usually faster at this stage, it can help reduce pains and discomfort. Enjoy every second of pregnancy, take lots of pictures and really pamper your belly, it’s a unique and incredible moment for a woman!!
