More information about 22 Weeks Pregnant
By 22 weeks pregnant, your baby already has fingernails and plays with his or her hands, touching their face and ears. Now, your baby’s fetal development is complete, and you see a perfect baby, just a bit thinner than on the day of birth. If you can’t eat as much as before, try to have smaller meals, but never go more than 3 hours without eating. Your baby needs to grow! Now your baby weighs about 430 grams and measures around 27 cm.
The ear bones are now fully formed1 and hearing is adapting, but your baby can clearly hear voices outside. There is still plenty of room in the belly, so your baby moves freely, does somersaults, and plays with arms and legs however they want. Better make the most of it, because soon that space inside the uterus will run out. Your baby’s features, like the nose and mouth, are well-defined and can be seen by ultrasound.
The bones, cartilage, and muscles are getting stronger every day2. You can already feel those strong kicks and elbows. Soon, Dad will be able to share this too by placing his hand on your belly and feeling the baby move.
How the Mom Is Feeling…
Are all of baby’s tests OK? Most doctors ask for the second-trimester anatomy scan between week 20 and week 24. The anatomy ultrasound is one of the routine prenatal scans and is important to see if all the baby’s organs are perfectly formed.
Of course, if there are any suspected malformations a deeper investigation is important, to avoid surprises at birth. Your blood pressure may rise a little3 from now on, so if you feel constant headaches, tell your doctor, okay?
Mom’s Discomforts
Are you having trouble going to the bathroom? In pain? It’s very common to have hemorrhoids at this time, caused by dilation of the veins in the anus. Make sure to eat a proper diet with fiber-rich foods and drink plenty of water to help with stool formation and make it easier to go.
The urge to urinate will increase as pregnancy progresses, but be alert if you feel burning or pain when urinating, because urinary tract infections are also common during this phase. If you have any unusual symptoms, talk to your doctor. By the way, yes, pregnant women can take antibiotics if needed! As long as it’s the right kind for you and prescribed by the doctor. Usually, cephalexin is used.
External Factors…
You’re feeling more and more sensitive to what you see and hear, and even a simple margarine commercial can make you cry. Don’t worry; this is normal because hormone levels are higher and affect your emotions. Talk to your partner and ask for help maintaining a calm routine and as little stress as possible. And honestly, a little extra affection and pampering doesn’t hurt, right?
