At 26 weeks of pregnancy, the baby measures about 35.6 centimeters and weighs approximately 760 grams. They already have tremendous strength in their legs and elbows. What Your Baby Is Doing This Week
By 26 weeks, dad can already feel the baby’s movements1. The baby, in turn, can grab the umbilical cord and play with it, as well as spend most of the time sleeping. Even though the baby can already hear sounds from outside the belly, for them it’s as if they’re submerged in a pool, hearing only muffled sounds. Another sign of their accelerated fetal development.
Because the space inside is getting smaller every day, their movements and kicks start to be painful for mom. However, it’s such an incredible feeling to sense the baby moving and showing they’re okay, that nothing else matters.
Try to lie on your back when your baby is moving. It’s amazing! You’ll see a roller coaster happening inside! At 26 weeks, you may actually see little feet and hands moving clearly under your belly skin. Make sure to record or take photos of this moment!
Baby’s Development
At 26 weeks pregnant, their eyes are already formed and the eyelids are able to practice slight openings, but they still can’t see anything inside the womb2. Their skin, which was previously pink and almost transparent, starts to gain a different tone thanks to the growing fat layer underneath. Every day their appearance becomes more and more like the skin they will have at birth.
How Mom Is Feeling…
In the 26th week of pregnancy, sharp pains or even discomfort in the pelvic floor are common3. If you’re a first-time mom, don’t worry, it’s completely normal! Your muscles are adapting to the new weight and shape of your body. They relax to make room for the growing bump. If this is your second pregnancy, pain can feel more intense if you have a cesarean section scar—but even so, it is perfectly normal.
If needed, ask your OB-GYN for help and a recommendation for medication. At 26 weeks, your uterus should measure on average between 22 and 24 cm in height. If it’s smaller, your doctor will likely order a Doppler ultrasound scan of the uterine arteries to check blood flow from the placenta to the baby. But don’t worry, every body reacts differently to the stages of pregnancy.
Pain in Mom
And the famous question: 26 weeks is how many months? At 26 weeks you are already in the final week of the 6th month. The weight of your belly may start to bother you, especially if you have to stand for long periods. Besides the discomfort in your legs, back pain is also common at this stage. Another discomfort is the typical swelling of the pregnancy period, which gets worse during hot weather.
The swelling at week 26 is the result of both the belly’s weight and fluid retention. Speaking of which, the weight of your belly can be a decisive factor for a restless night’s sleep. That’s because the belly often hurts if you remain on one side only. So try switching sides and put a pillow under your knees for support. Try to spend as much time as possible on your left side, as this improves circulation.
Mom’s diet should be varied and nutritious, with a focus on quality foods. Don’t focus on quantity but rather on the quality of what you eat, ensuring you are providing the right vitamins for your body and your baby. Healthy eating leads to a healthy pregnancy!
External Factors…
At 26 weeks, anxiety may start creeping in again, either from tiredness or from the desire to finally meet your baby. If you can’t manage it, your sleep can be affected, which isn’t ideal right now—you need to rest and sleep as much as you can! Try to relax, do things you enjoy, and don’t dwell on worries. Enjoy every moment of pregnancy because soon you’ll have your baby in your arms and will miss your bump!
