DAY 6 • OF WEEK 27

IMPORTANT: Have you already set up your baby’s room? Crib, hygiene kit, sheets, even crib bumpers? Don’t leave it to the last minute, after all, there are so many details to sort out before delivery. The sooner it’s ready, the better!

Baby’s Position in the Uterus

By 27 weeks of pregnancy, the space in the uterus is getting tighter, and the baby may be lying sideways, sitting, or already head down. However, there’s no need to worry, since before the end of pregnancy, they can still change positions several times.

Their skin is still very wrinkled and looks quite thin compared to the chubby baby that will be born. At 27 weeks, fat is now rapidly accumulating under the skin until the day they’re born.

Baby Hiccups

It is very common that at 27 weeks pregnant the baby makes repetitive movements in the belly, known as hiccups1. Even though they are not yet breathing air but amniotic fluid, your baby may have hiccup bouts throughout the day. These bouts last just a short while. Don’t worry, this is absolutely normal since it’s just diaphragm training.

Their brain at 27 weeks is well-developed and, in fact, very active. The grooved look of the brain surface is becoming more evident, and more brain tissue is starting to develop. All the sensory brain connections are in place and active. The baby is even able to dream at this stage of development!

How the Mother Feels

Mom, did you know your organs reorganize themselves inside your body during pregnancy? Yes, in order to make room for the growing uterus, the stomach, intestines, kidneys, and even the heart go through changes inside the body. They have to work twice as hard even when pressed against your back or ribs. The organs under the most demand during pregnancy are the lungs and heart, as they have to provide double the oxygen: for both mom and baby. That’s why it’s so hard to breathe during pregnancy. Your body is working to its limit and with less and less space. At this stage, pains can appear suddenly, and that’s normal2!

Changes in the Woman

The stomach is compressed and resized, making eating more and more complicated. Even a little food fills it up. The kidneys dilate, and any pre-existing kidney stones may cause symptoms. That’s why kidney stones are common in pregnancy3. Skin and hair can also change. In some women, hair looks better, and in others, it may become drier or oilier. It all depends on how the body reacts to hormonal changes.

At 27 weeks pregnant, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and a lot of leg cramps are very common. Talk to your obstetrician about how to prevent, reduce, or ease symptoms. There are some special maternity stockings that can help at this stage, in addition, of course, to rest and plenty of hydration.

External Factors

The most awaited day is getting closer and the anxiety keeps building. Have you already finished the layette? And your hospital bag? Get the list of essentials from your chosen hospital and organize everything so that on the day, nothing is forgotten. Hospitals provide the list of what you need to bring, both for yourself and the baby.
