Baby’s Development
At this 32-week stage, the baby, who already keeps their eyes open and moves towards the light, can blink normally and identify voices and sounds from outside the womb, their direct contact with the world out here. Their brain is now visibly well formed and their bones are as rigid as they should be.
The amniotic fluid keeps being swallowed by the baby and forms the meconium in the intestine, which will become the baby’s first stool after birth. At 32 weeks, the space inside the womb gets tighter and their movements begin to decrease, so don’t worry, this is totally normal at this stage.
At 32 weeks, the vernix is working overtime to cover your baby’s thin and delicate skin. This layer is a kind of natural fat that protects the skin from the amniotic fluid2. It can easily be identified after birth, as it’s the white layer babies still have when they are born.
If your little one is a boy, at 32 weeks his small testicles have already descended or are about to descend to the scrotum. But sometimes, a baby is born and one of the testicles still hasn’t moved into proper position, which is not a reason for concern. Soon, it will settle into the right place!
If the baby is born at 32 weeks, there are good chances they will survive without help from breathing equipment, but life inside the uterus is still very important at this stage for the baby to gain weight and for their respiratory system to be mature enough at birth.
How Mom Is Feeling…
At this stage, the mother continues to gain weight, but less than in the second trimester of pregnancy.
At 32 weeks, practice contractions, the famous Braxton Hicks contractions3, also become more evident, where the belly tightens, but there isn’t intense pain as there is during labor. It’s just the uterus preparing for labor and it is perfectly normal and more common than you’d imagine. The uterine height should be about 29 to 33 cm, depending on the size of the baby and the growth rate.
Taking Care of Mom
Your legs and feet are more and more swollen and this is very common in the last weeks. Therefore, drink plenty of fluids and avoid salty foods, as well as very tight clothing and shoes. Your belly button will stick out more, and you might even notice it through your clothes. But don’t worry, it will return to its old shape soon after your baby is born. It’s just a matter of days.
At this final stretch, you may be gaining up to half a kilo per week and that reflects your baby’s weight gain. Make sure you eat a proper, healthy diet so your baby receives all the necessary nutrients to get strong and develop properly. Take advantage of this time to wash your baby’s clothes and get all the last details ready, because now at 32 weeks you’re very close to meeting the greatest love of your life!
External Factors…
Reaching 32 weeks, the days seem endless. Fatigue is written all over your face, especially because of difficulty sleeping. The cramps that get your body ready for labor become more uncomfortable and it feels like everything irritates you at this stage.
