Baby’s Development
If your baby is born today at 37 weeks pregnant, they are already considered full term, as we are in the second week of the 9th gestational month. The expected birth date is just an estimate doctors make, because babies can safely stay in the womb up to 42 weeks. Of course, doctors prefer not to risk letting a pregnancy go on that long, but it’s possible!
The baby at 37 weeks pregnant is exactly the newborn who will be born! The only difference is the weight. The longer they stay in the womb, the more weight they will gain. Their lungs are well developed and they are already practicing breathing with the help of the amniotic fluid. Being born this week, all your baby’s organs will function as expected2, with no major issues, but don’t rush! Let your baby decide when it’s time.
Inside the womb, a 37-week-old baby usually follows a routine, just like after birth. They sleep a lot, several times a day, yawn, wake up, and go back to sleep again. Between naps, they play and move around, though now there’s less space, but they still try to get as comfy as possible.
How Mom Is Feeling…
It’s almost here! You’re now in the second week of the 9th month! Happiness fills the family and the anxiety grows each day as the birth approaches. Some moms at this stage are already tired and can’t wait for the baby to be born. Surely everything is ready for the birth, from the hospital bag to the little party favors.
Do you already know where you will give birth? Have you toured the maternity hospital? It’s very advisable to check this and preferably have a few routes planned out in case your water breaks or you need to go quickly to the hospital. Doctors usually make their phone available for emergencies and if you notice the mucous plug has come out or is coming out, it’s a good idea to contact your doctor to find out what to do.
The last ultrasound to check fetal development is usually done around 37 weeks, to check placental maturity and the fetus’s position. Do you have a birth plan? If you’re planning on a cesarean, your doctor may already have an estimate this week.
Since the risk of preeclampsia3 exists from week 20, by now it should have been ruled out. Even so, in week 37 it’s still necessary to carefully monitor your blood pressure at every appointment. Watch out for signs like swelling of your face and hands, high blood pressure, and protein in your urine.
At 37 weeks, bathroom trips become more and more frequent since the weight of your uterus on your bladder makes you need to urinate all the time. Back pain is also very common, and finding a comfortable sleeping position can be a real challenge. But you’re nearly there—just a little more patience, mom!
External Factors…
Mom, forget about responsibilities and chores, now it’s time for you to rest and recharge all your energy. Soon your baby will be home and you’ll need plenty of stamina to care for them and face the marathon of breastfeeding. Have everything prepared, including your hospital bag, and make the most of these last days to relax and rest.
