8 Weeks Pregnant
Your 8th week begins
- Development: genitalia is no longer ambiguous and sex differentiation begins.
- Schedule: blood and urine tests should be performed to check the mother’s health conditions.
- How many months is 8 weeks? 8 weeks pregnant is 2 months. With week 8 of pregnancy, you are in the final week of your second month.
IMPORTANT: At the beginning of prenatal care, you need to have a blood test to rule out diseases such as HIV/AIDS, syphilis, toxoplasmosis and also to verify HCG levels. This test also checks iron levels, RH factor and blood sugar.
- At this stage of fetal development, the eyelids and upper lip start to appear and the ears take on a more familiar shape.
- The baby grows rapidly, and it is very important for the mother to be taking folic acid to help support healthy development.
- The baby moves a lot inside mom’s uterus, but you cannot feel it yet. There is still a large gap between the uterine wall and the fetus.
- At this stage it is quite normal for cramps to start appearing.
More information about 8 Weeks Pregnant
Yes, your baby grows and develops every day! And according to the standard fetal development, at 8 weeks pregnant, the eyelids and upper lip start to emerge while the ears take on a more familiar shape1. Tooth buds are also sprouting, and blood vessels can be easily seen through the very thin skin.
At 8 weeks of pregnancy, the neck is more upright, the fingers are separated, and the tail is gone! Now, your baby measures about 1.6 cm and is the size of a kidney bean. The baby grows quickly and it is very important for the mother to be taking folic acid to help support healthy development2.
At 8 weeks pregnancy, the baby is moving a lot inside the mom’s uterus, but you still can’t feel it. There is a large space between the uterine wall and the fetus. You will only start to feel it when the baby starts to touch the uterine wall and the movements are picked up by nerve endings. Still, many moms swear they feel something now, but it is usually related to movements of the uterus itself or even gas!
How Is Mom Feeling…
Mom’s body is looking more and more pregnant every day. If you’re having nausea and feeling really sick, ask your gynecologist to prescribe something to help with the discomfort or, who knows, maybe start using an anti-nausea wristband. I’ve heard several times that crackers (saltine crackers) can help reduce nausea. I tried it and it worked for me—maybe it will work for you too.
By the way, speaking of doctors—if you haven’t started prenatal care yet, don’t wait any longer; book your appointment as soon as possible! Prenatal monitoring is essential for your and your baby’s health, and is even better when begun early in pregnancy.
At 8 weeks, are your prenatal tests ready? Some changes may be seen in your tests, but don’t worry if your toxoplasmosis IgG result is positive. This means you’re immune to the disease. The same is true for rubella! If you still have questions, talk to your doctor as soon as possible and get all the answers you need.
At this stage, it’s common to start experiencing cramps. This happens because of the hormonal discharge occurring in your body, loosening the abdominal ligaments and making the muscles more sensitive.
It’s really common to see women at just 8 weeks pregnant already complaining of leg and back pain3 and, of course, abdominal pain similar to menstrual cramps. However, if these pains are very intense, see your doctor to make sure everything is as expected. Don’t forget that a urine test type 1 is also very important!
External Factors…
When I was pregnant, I loved reading stories and seeing ultrasounds from other moms to understand fetal development. That way, I could better understand what was happening inside me. I believe you might be curious too, and the video above showing the mysteries of fetal development is just amazing!.
