Famivita reader Jann, now expecting a little princess, shares how she managed to get pregnant after a hysterosalpingography1. Find out how she discovered the pregnancy shortly after having the exam! If you’re about to undergo this procedure, know that it is more common than people think despite its reputation for pain. Nonetheless, it is a great exam and can truly open doors for pregnancy right after it’s performed. Wanting to help readers who need to have the exam and encourage them, Jann kindly agreed to share her personal experience with the HSG—pay close attention and thank you again, Jann!

“I would like to share my experience regarding the much-feared exam called hysterosalpingography. It really is a strange name, just like the procedure, but it was the best solution found for something that had been tormenting me for several months. I’m a mother to a six-year-old boy, and about a year ago we decided to expand our family. We had ten months of unsuccessful attempts, all tests came back fine (for both my husband and me), except for a check of the fallopian tubes. So I started to research this exam, as a friend had a similar experience and succeeded shortly after.

During the exam, the doctor uses a contrast agent2, which is injected through the cervix, and then an X-ray is taken to observe for possible blockages or other abnormalities in the tubes and the uterus. Many women say it’s possible to get pregnant after this exam, but I don’t recommend doing it just to speed up the process, as there are several factors that might make pregnancy unviable3. Anyway, I read a lot of stories online that almost stopped me from going through with it, but my desire was stronger than anything, so I decided to ‘face it,’ even though I knew it could be painful—and it really was, I’m not going to lie, I felt such an intense cramp that I was shaking from head to toe. The exam lasted about thirty minutes, and I left with the result that everything was normal. However, something told me that the contrast agent somehow cleared the passage—laughs—even if it couldn’t be seen on the ultrasound, and with this thought I went home feeling confident.

The best part was yet to come—believe it or not, twenty days after the procedure I got my positive! Today, I’m five months pregnant, eagerly waiting to meet my long-awaited daughter!”
