Cough is an uncomfortable symptom for anyone, and even more so during pregnancy, when sensitivity is heightened, fatigue is greater, and to make matters worse, there aren’t many medication options available to resolve the situation.
Why Does Cough Occur?
Generally, cough appears following a strong cold or flu and does not cause any harm to the baby1, as the baby is well protected inside the womb. However, it can also be a symptom of an allergic reaction, and if it persists for several days or is accompanied by a fever, you should see a doctor for a consultation and more appropriate treatment.
How to Prevent Cough During Pregnancy?
As mentioned before, cough is a symptom of a cold or flu, so it’s necessary to take extra care during this period, since your immune system is working for the pregnancy and the baby’s development, meaning you are more vulnerable to viruses and infections floating in the air2.
- Drink at least 2 liters of water per day to stay hydrated. Water is rich in minerals and cleanses the entire body.
- Include as many vegetables, greens, and fruits as possible in your diet. These types of foods contain antioxidants that help improve immunity.
- Reduce activity and stress. During this period, you should rest and relax as much as you can.
We often hear the phrase “pregnancy is not an illness” — and it’s true, but it does require extra care because you need to be healthy and energetic enough to withstand nine months of changes in your body. You’ll experience nine months of a lot of sleepiness, swelling, and physical discomfort, as a new body is growing inside you and preparing every second for childbirth.
How to Treat Cough During Pregnancy?
During pregnancy, you must be careful with medications. Not every medication is recommended and tested for pregnant women, so you should only take any medicine on your doctor’s recommendation. Any medication taken without a doctor’s prescription may compromise the baby’s health.3
The medications normally recommended for pregnant women are paracetamol and buscopan for pain and fever. In the case of cough during pregnancy, inhalation with saline solution is recommended, as well as lemon and honey tea to soothe irritation. Besides antihistamines and syrups, there are also some home remedies that, while not as scientifically supported, may help to relieve the discomfort of coughing during pregnancy.
Onion and honey tea – Slice a large onion and let it stand for 24 hours with half a teacup of sugar. After this period, add the juice of two lemons and two teaspoons of honey, mix, strain, and take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day.
Watercress and honey tea – Put water and watercress leaves in a saucepan and boil. Afterwards, blend in a blender or food processor, strain, add 1 cup of honey and juice of 1 lemon, and store in a closed container. Take 2 tablespoons 3 times a day.
