Certain drinks are unhealthy at any stage of life, especially during pregnancy, and one that tops this list is soda. Because it is a beverage with a high sugar or artificial sweetener content, sodium, caffeine, and preservatives, it offers no health benefits1. But after all, is soda bad during pregnancy?

Discomforts Caused by Soda

There is no specific contraindication for soda during pregnancy, but due to its ingredients, some discomforts may occur, such as abdominal discomfort from excessive gas. Another point worth mentioning is that excessive intake can lead to rapid weight gain due to the high amount of sugar in a small glass. During pregnancy, it is not recommended to consume light or diet sodas because they contain a high concentration of artificial sweeteners2.

Another issue is that soda can cause more discomfort in pregnancy due to swelling or fluid retention caused by the sodium in its composition. Pregnant women are already prone to swelling during this stage, and consuming foods or drinks that help retain fluids makes the situation even worse, so they should be consumed with care and in moderation.

Other Harmful Beverages

Not just soda, but all foods with a high sugar and caffeine content should be consumed in moderation during pregnancy, in order to avoid problems caused by excess of these substances.

One of the problems caused by excessive caffeine intake is the risk of miscarriage, especially in the first trimester. Remember that caffeine is also found in some pain medications, so if you notice any unusual symptoms, consult your doctor immediately and do not take any medication without a doctor’s prescription.

Other Foods That Are Harmful During Pregnancy

When we discover a pregnancy, being careful to eat better is essential. After all, everything we eat and drink will directly affect the baby’s development. According to nutritionists, it is not necessary to give up certain foods during this period, but moderation in what you eat is essential for maintaining good health.

Obviously, some foods and drinks are considered harmful to health, especially if consumed in excess3. In pregnancy, these foods can affect fetal development, as is the case with alcoholic beverages.

Alcoholic Beverages

The consumption of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy has been proven to be very harmful! These substances cross the placental barrier and directly affect fetal development, being responsible for malformations or the birth of premature babies. And yes, this includes that famous beer as well!

Eggs

When it comes to food, eating eggs is recommended with caution because of the risk of salmonella contamination. But you don’t have to cut eggs out of your diet—just avoid consuming them raw. Eat them boiled or fried, and make sure the yolk is fully cooked.

Meats

The same goes for meat, both white and red. Meats are essential in the pregnant woman’s diet due to their high vitamin content, but they should always be eaten well-cooked and well-done, avoiding raw meats due to the risk of bacterial contamination.

Salt-Preserved Foods

Foods that are preserved or have a high concentration of salt, such as dried beef or cod, should be consumed with caution. Salt is a major villain for high blood pressure, which can be very serious for pregnant women, especially those who already suffer from hypertension.

Condiments

Regarding condiments, all are allowed except for pepper, which can cause heartburn or increase the chances of hemorrhoids. For women who are already accustomed to spicy foods and do not have any problems with them, use is allowed. Prefer a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and greens that will safely, nutritiously, and deliciously meet all gestational needs, for both mother and developing baby. This way, weight gain will be controlled, without excesses and with reduced risk of developing dangerous conditions during this period, such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
