Coffee is an essential beverage in the daily routine of many Brazilians. But due to its stimulating properties, it is recommended to be careful with the intake of caffeine during pregnancy – this also applies to teas, soft drinks, and chocolate. But why should you be careful? Well, caffeine stimulates a gland in our body that produces adrenaline, causing veins and arteries to contract. As a result, blood flow ends up decreasing, which can lead to reduced placental blood supply and a decrease in the nutrients provided to the fetus.

If placental blood supply decreases, the baby’s development is affected and, in some cases, miscarriage may occur.

Care should be taken with daily caffeine intake during pregnancy.
Consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine may increase the chances of preterm birth and even miscarriage. However, some researchers state that there isn’t much evidence of such a risk, so the ideal is to avoid consuming this amount. To be on the safe side, it is best to follow your doctor’s recommendation before consuming coffee and any other foods containing caffeine.
