History

Founded in the early 2000s, Instituto Verhum is a clinic that covers women’s health as a whole. Initially known for its specialization in gynecological endoscopy, today the clinic boasts more than a thousand births. Currently, the clinic has professionals ranging from andrology to gynecological oncology. In this way, according to the clinic, it is equipped to investigate and treat the most diverse causes of infertility.

About the medical staff

The medical staff at Instituto Verhum includes professionals from different parts of the country. Many of the doctors graduated from traditional universities in Brazil’s capital, such as the University of Brasília (UnB). Others also come from major institutions like the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). The vast majority also have completed extension and specialization courses, both domestically and internationally.

About costs and treatments

For various reasons, clinics generally do not openly disclose their prices. This is due to, for example, the fact that fertility treatments are highly diverse, which can be complex or surprisingly simple, and therefore the costs can also vary greatly. In this sense, as most clinics do, Instituto Verhum has only announced an average of R$20,000 per cycle of IVF and R$1,500 per year for embryo freezing.

Instituto Verhum also offers a social program called the “Projeto Ser Mãe” (“Be a Mother Project”). The initiative aims to offer consultations and tests to help lower-income couples conceive naturally. The Institute also periodically organizes free care campaigns, with consultations in the fields of assisted reproduction and urology. Both actions require scheduling in advance.

Objectives

  • Provide comprehensive assistance to couples struggling to conceive, through a clinical staff with various specialties.
  • Offer a warm, comfortable physical environment with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Be thorough in diagnosing each couple’s problems, since each case is different, as are the possible solutions.
  • Use the appropriate techniques for each case. Often the solution can be simple and, therefore, less expensive.
  • Provide human and welcoming care during what can be a difficult time.
  • Invest in the ongoing improvement of their professionals, to ensure they are always up to date with the most modern techniques.

Differentials

Comprehensive structure

The physical space at Instituto Verhum includes consultation rooms, exam rooms, operating rooms, and a laboratory. A complete structure makes consultations much more practical, as everything can be done in the same building. This also reduces the cost of some tests and procedures.

Emphasis on gynecological endoscopy

Instituto Verhum has a tradition in gynecological endoscopy. This set of techniques uses small devices to see directly inside the body. Many of these procedures are extremely important for diagnosing and treating some fertility issues. Laparoscopy, for example, is one of the best ways to identify endometriosis lesions. Among the procedures offered at Verhum are video laparoscopy and video hysterectomy.

Multidisciplinary treatment

Infertility can have many different roots, and sometimes the path to a solution can be complex. To investigate these possible causes more efficiently and accurately, Instituto Verhum has professionals from a range of fields. These include reproductive medicine, general gynecology, obstetrics, psychology, genetics, andrology, oncology, and gynecological endoscopy. Thus, Verhum provides professionals from various fields, enabling support at all stages of treatment.

Oncofertility

Oncological treatments are often hard on the body, especially fertility. Unfortunately, surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy often result in infertility for both men and women. It is possible to overcome this problem with assisted reproduction techniques, such as gamete freezing and IVF. In addition to assisted reproduction specialists, Instituto Verhum also counts on professionals specialized in oncology.

Accessible fertility care

Carried out by Instituto Verhum, the “Ser Mãe” project aims to help lower-income families address infertility. The Institute’s approach is that it is often possible to increase the chances of conception naturally. The project offers tests, consultations, and guidance. The Institute also promotes events providing free urology or assisted reproduction consultations for these families.

For people needing more specialized care, the Institute provides the option of health insurance coverage for certain types of tests.

The Clinic in the Press

Researchers confirm that men are able to maintain fertility even after age 60
“A study conducted by Instituto Verhum in Brasília showed that a man’s age does not negatively affect fertility. As men age, we know that sperm count and motility decrease. But this is not decisive for the ability to have children. In the end, going from 50 million to 10 million cells does not make much difference at the time of reproduction, says researcher Vinícius Medina Lopes, a member of the study group.”

Obese women have more difficulty getting pregnant and a higher chance of miscarriage
“Obesity is one of the health issues that most concerns the medical community. Besides increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease, it also makes pregnancy more difficult, both naturally and through assisted reproductive techniques. This was the result of a study conducted by Instituto Verhum. That’s because high levels of body fat interfere with ovulation.”

Mother’s Day: female couple from Brasília shares their journey to get pregnant
“The first attempts brought emotional exhaustion, but did not discourage them. At the first clinic where Michely, age 38, underwent the procedure, the word ‘negative’ appeared on every pregnancy test. About a year ago, the public servant sought out a different institution. She discovered the “Motherhood within reach for every woman” project by Instituto Verhum, which provided a discount for her treatment, and on the second attempt at in vitro fertilization, she was finally able to read the word ‘positive’ on the pregnancy test.”

Stress suffered during the pandemic may affect babies’ brains, says study
“Tatianna Ribeiro, obstetrician and in vitro fertilization specialist at Instituto Verhum, in Brasília, also highlights the need for more investigation of the phenomenon. ‘The sample analyzed was small. Only 65 of those evaluated had children during the pandemic. For more robust conclusions, this picture needs to be expanded,’ she explains. ‘Even so, we know that stress during the most severe phase of the coronavirus outbreak brought a lot of strain, and this likely affected fetal development.’”
