There’s nothing better than watching your belly grow healthily and wearing clothes that flatter you and make you feel comfortable at such a special time. When I was pregnant with my daughter, there weren’t as many beautiful clothing options and specialized stores as there are now. These are maternity clothes, yes, but with younger cuts, and maternity clothes are increasingly similar to regular fashion styles.

Back in my mother’s and mother-in-law’s days, it was almost a uniform: a floaty top and pants, smocked or A-line dresses. Fortunately, times change, and as time passed, the fashion industry realized the need for attractive and functional pieces for expectant mothers. Who didn’t wear maternity overalls in the 1990s and 2000s? I did! Hahaha, and I honestly regret it so much — I could have looked so much better during pregnancy, but oh well…

Well, let’s talk a bit about fashion for current and future moms. Nowadays, there are stores specialized in maternity wear like Zazou, Mamãe Barriga, Renner also offers nice pieces, Be Mammy, Marisa, and others. But I must say I still found the prices a bit steep, but if you think about the comfort and the fact that you can wear the pieces throughout pregnancy and some time after childbirth until you lose the swelling, it’s definitely worth investing in maternity clothes. Trendier tops, wrap jackets, tailored pants ideal for work, jeans for outings, shorts and bermuda with elastic in the waist. All these pieces are super versatile and, if you know how to style them, give you a variety of looks without having to spend a fortune on clothes you’ll only wear for a short while. Invest in accessories to make your outfit even nicer, and more basic pieces can become wardrobe staples for any occasion.

One particular piece that caught my attention was a pair of pants with adjustable waistband — they’re like kids’ pants with internal, buttoned elastic, so you can adjust them from three months all the way to nine months of pregnancy, using the same pants. Zazou has a collection for plus-size moms-to-be, called plus-size maternity, so if you were already above your ideal weight, you’re included now, too. I used to hunt for clothes myself and it was a real struggle to find something. There are also websites specializing in formal maternity wear — dressing well is so much easier these days.

Little tips: Go for comfortable fabrics and choose tops that stretch a lot in the front to accommodate your belly. When picking pants, find those that fit better on the lower part — it’s not good if the elastic presses your belly too much, as it can hurt and even contribute to the formation of stretch marks. Wear lower heels — don’t try to wear super high heels with a big belly. They increase your risk of falls, and of course, no mom wants any accidents.

You can dress fashionably during pregnancy — you just need to know where to look!
