We women spend our whole lives worried about hiding those pesky cellulite and stretch marks, and few know that cellulite during pregnancy tends to get even worse due to the increased hormones. During pregnancy, there is a significant increase in the production of estrogen, which is the female hormone responsible for distributing fat cells in our bodies.

As hormone production during pregnancy rises way above normal, the body will accumulate more in areas prone to depositing localized fat, obstructing the lymphatic drainage system and weakening tissues, which causes cellulite to appear. Therefore, special care should be taken during pregnancy. For moms who already lead a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and good nutrition before becoming pregnant, and who do not experience a significant amount of weight gain during pregnancy, cellulite during pregnancy won’t be as much of an issue. Cellulite is a sign that the body’s cells are not well-prepared to handle weight gain; with a healthier, better-prepared body, this risk is much lower.

What Can I Do to Reduce Cellulite During Pregnancy?

If a woman already normally has cellulite, it may be genetic or even a result of poor diet, but there are ways to lessen it and to prevent it from getting worse during pregnancy. Here are a few tips:

  • Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E in your diet; these are great for skin health. Also, foods rich in omega-3 fats help with skin elasticity.

  • Do an exfoliating massage in the shower, using a soft sponge and circular motions all over the body, especially around the thighs, buttocks, arms, and waist where fat tends to accumulate. This helps to break down fat deposits beneath the skin, making it easier for the body to eliminate them and preventing cellulite.

  • Drink plenty of water. Water not only hydrates the body but also helps prevent toxin buildup and liquid retention.

In addition to these tips, pregnant women can stay active by practicing physical exercise that will support their health, such as yoga and water aerobics. Good nutrition is essential, and it’s recommended to reduce coffee intake, since it can contribute to the orange-peel effect on the skin and is a major cause of cell dehydration. Another increasingly popular drink is green tea. It’s suggested to drink one cup per day to aid in the body’s detoxification, as it is a food rich in antioxidants. It helps control blood sugar levels, but should obviously be consumed in moderation.

Ideally, women should monitor their weight gain during pregnancy, eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy routine with exercise. The use of cellulite creams is not recommended during pregnancy, as they may contain substances that can induce miscarriage, so it’s always best to consult your doctor before using any kind of treatment.
