In the past, the only way for a baby to be born was vaginally. With the advances in medicine, cesarean delivery appeared to help mothers who need it, and today, unfortunately, it has become increasingly common. However, the types of childbirth can be much more diverse than you may think. There are some types of childbirth that can surprise due to their special circumstances, and let’s say that some of these are almost as rare as vaginal breech birth. The most well-known types of childbirth are:

  • Normal vaginal delivery (in a hospital or at home, when the baby is born vaginally but with interventions)
  • Humanized birth (respecting the immediate wishes of the mother during and after delivery, with the most natural characteristics possible)
  • Cesarean section (via surgery)
  • Water birth (usually at home or in adapted maternity wards)

But beyond the type of delivery, some ways in which the baby is born can be at the very least curious and catch attention for being special. Of course, every baby is a miracle of life, but some births really stand out. A good example of a different kind of birth is the breech delivery. To understand breech birth, we need to know that, for a baby to be born vaginally without major problems or concerns, the baby should be in a cephalic position—that is, head down in the mother’s belly (see more about pregnancy week by week here). This is the ideal position so that the head, which is the hardest part of the body to come out, is delivered first.

But not all babies behave so perfectly and obediently! Types of delivery can become more unusual, like the breech birth, which is nothing more than a baby who is born feet first, meaning the baby was sitting. A baby who is sitting can have some variations: complete breech (sitting cross-legged) or incomplete breech (sitting with legs up, against the body).

Some maneuvers can help the baby change position, such as manual inversion performed by professionals experienced in this technique. However, if there is no alternative or the mother does not wish for a vaginal birth, the method used can be a cesarean section, but it is indeed possible to have a breech vaginal birth.

But there are types of birth, such as birth in the sac, that are even rarer than breech delivery. This is when a baby is born with the amniotic sac still intact! Very rare and one of the types of birth that are truly exciting. The baby simply comes into the world still wrapped in the membrane and surrounded by amniotic fluid. In fact, there is no explanation for this phenomenon, but it is beautiful to see a baby who is born and doesn’t even realize it…

They say that babies born in these two circumstances—these different types of delivery—are said to be very lucky in life. They are privileged children, with many blessings from God throughout their lives. Every birth is beautiful! Some stand out for their uniqueness, but the love is the same for all babies in all types of delivery.
