Couples dedicated to achieving parenthood spend immeasurable fortunes and have few accessible options. With this in mind, an American company created a non-prescription product that can be used by any woman who wishes to become pregnant. Dr. Lara Oboler, cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, felt ready to start her family after turning 30, but things did not go according to plan.

So, she began researching medications that could help and came across mucolytics, a medicine widely used to relieve chest congestion. In these studies, she discovered that mucolytics also act on cervical mucus by making it thinner, which helps sperm reach the egg. This effect is the opposite of birth control pills, which contain progesterone and are intended to thicken cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

After starting mucolytic treatment, Dr. Lara Oboler achieved her dream and became pregnant after one month of use. For this reason, the research concluded that it was a fertility treatment option and should be made available to all women. In 2010, she joined forces with her sister Goldner and a marketing executive to start making the product. At the end of 2012, the complete conception kit was launched at a cost of $29.99. The kit contains two types of supplements with a one-month supply. VitaPrep is a blend of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folic acid, and FertilPrep is the mucolytic combined with an active ingredient of N-acetylcysteine (NAC).

“N-acetylcysteine is our main ingredient in FertilPrep, and it was carefully studied in placebo-controlled labs,” said Dr. Oboler. We have proven that the use of N-acetylcysteine increases the chances of pregnancy in women who suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Since the Complete Conception Kit is considered a supplement, it did not require FDA approval in the United States. However, the website provides information about years of research and guidance from gynecologists and obstetricians who created the kit. The creators state that the compound is intended for all women who wish to become pregnant, not only those who are struggling or who have PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Dr. Jackie Walters, obstetrician and gynecologist and member of “Married to Medicine”, questioned the release of the product and the company’s decision to openly market it to any type of patient, since infertility has many causes and PCOS is only considered after 12 months of trying naturally.

“PregPrep was created to help any woman who wishes to become pregnant,” said Dr. Goldner. The product is the only option available for healthy women to give nature a helping hand; it not only has the right nutrients for conception, it also contains a natural mucolytic that works quickly for conception. The company was founded by its creators in 2010 and more than 7,000 kits have already been sold; however, as of the present date, studies with concrete results on its effectiveness and safety have not been published. There are no plans yet to market the fertility pill in Brazil.
