After the positive test, the questions really begin, but as an experienced mother I already knew that the ultrasound could only be done after the 7th week, because that’s when the baby’s heartbeat can be detected1. I scheduled an appointment with an obstetrician (OB), took my blood test for her calculations. She told me that I was 5 weeks pregnant and ordered a series of routine prenatal tests, including the ultrasound. I scheduled it for 15 days later, which would give enough time to complete 7 weeks.
I anxiously waited for the ultrasound day and I think that’s normal, since you really see the pregnancy visually (that’s when it really sinks in) that my baby was actually inside me and healthy. On the day of the exam, my husband and I went together, I was happy but a bit apprehensive. I filled out the paperwork and waited for the doctor to call, and finally it was time! My heart was beating so hard you could hear it… I laid down on the exam table, and there was my baby, 6mm, a tiny little person who had barely arrived and I already loved so intensely!
The Most Beautiful Baby in the World!
You could barely see anything, just a tiny dot and its yolk sac. Such a small heart beating so strongly, as fast as mine, and both my husband and I were overcome with emotion in that exam room, I couldn’t hold back the tears when I realized everything was okay! The doctor dated the pregnancy a week behind what the obstetrician had calculated, but luckily we could see everything perfectly. Otherwise, I think I would have been much more anxious, and we always get anxious, so I always advise having the scan at 7 or 8 weeks of pregnancy. The estimated due date (EDD) was 07/23/2011 and guess what? Melissa was born on July 22, 2011. And that ultrasound was just the first of many more throughout this blessed pregnancy God gave me!
