I’ve always heard that a woman’s sixth sense is very strong. Especially when it comes to things about the body and also in these cases of pregnancy. Sometimes I found myself thinking, “I think I’m pregnant” and every time that feeling was stronger and unexplainable, I really was pregnant.
The female perspective on motherhood can be an effective way of feeling that the dreamed-of (or not) baby is on the way. Knowing your own body can help a lot. As my mother says, a woman knows when she’s pregnant, it’s amazing. Simply thinking you are pregnant is not a diagnosis.
Is the Sixth Sense Reliable?
That’s why there are ways and means to know if you really are pregnant, and the thought I think I’m pregnant can turn into a beautiful and resounding “I’m Pregnant” and shout the news from the rooftops. Whether confirmed by pharmacy tests or even a beta HCG.
However, not all women are able to perceive this early on, because anxiety can get in the way of making a diagnosis. This difficulty happens because feelings are involved, or even physically, so keeping calm can help a lot to unravel and discover the signs that the body sends that it’s carrying something new, something precious.
I Think I’m Pregnant—What Now?
If your sixth sense says the time has come, then it’s time to analyze your cycle. How many days is your cycle? Normally a woman’s cycle is from 21 to 35 days1 (as a parameter). If you are regular, you should know how many days it lasts. If your cycle is irregular, just calculate an average.
After you know your cycle length, just calculate whether you’re already late or not. Some women can tell they’re pregnant as early as the first few weeks. Three or four weeks of pregnancy is considered too early to really know, but some are lucky and manage to detect HCG much earlier than expected2.
When Does HCG Appear in the Body?
Usually, HCG only appears in the body after implantation so, this can happen after the symptoms, the premonition, the feeling that this cycle worked out. That’s what happened to me, I felt the cycle had worked, I felt I really was expecting a baby. I thought, “I think I’m pregnant” and so I took the test very early, around the possible 9th DPO (day post-ovulation).
Of course, it was a big negative! A bucket of cold water, but the feeling that I was pregnant was very strong and with five days late, I finally took a pregnancy test that confirmed my suspicion. My mother’s intuition had spoken louder. During my second pregnancy it was the same, I found myself thinking I was pregnant, but even after doing some tests and all were negative, that feeling wouldn’t go away. I would lie on my stomach and feel a small “ball” in my abdomen.
I knew it wasn’t normal, but I found myself thinking it was nothing major since all tests were negative. Then, after a month of missed periods, I had the surprise of being pregnant. Already eight weeks along. I even mentioned it to my mother, I think I’m pregnant but I don’t feel anything!
Should I Trust My Sixth Sense or Not?
So my advice is: do wait for your period to be late no matter how anxious you are about the situation. If you feel that you’re pregnant, it’s best to give it time for the hormone to rise so you don’t get a false negative. Mixing up the symptoms is normal; post-ovulation progesterone can make you feel like you’re having pregnancy symptoms, but as explained in this post, the symptoms may be post-ovulation symptoms and that can interfere with your perception.
Don’t forget, to actually confirm pregnancy, a missed period is required3. If you’re still not convinced, wait a week and repeat the test. Pregnant women get this same feeling; preparing the nest and doing a thorough clean before the baby arrives is part of the maternal sixth sense. Reader Graziela recently discovered she was expecting and shared how her intuition led her to expect good news…
“I always asked God to give me signs of things that could happen in my life, and this time, even though I wasn’t expecting it, he made me feel that there was already another heart beating inside me. It was a Thursday, I bought a test because something inside me kept telling me I had to do it. I wasn’t trying to get pregnant, but every month my period would be one or two months late and that was normal. On this day it was only three days late, but I bought the test and took it, and it felt like a miracle to see two lines, I couldn’t believe it! I took three more pharmacy tests and a Beta just to believe. A mother’s sixth sense is born with the baby.“
“It’s as if women were given the gift of feeling new life inside them, even before being sure… Don’t worry, you’ll know when your time comes.”
