Specialist and child consultant Michele Melão once again discusses some peculiarities that occur in baby’s sleep—very interesting!
“This probably sounds familiar to many mothers. My baby slept like an angel until 4 months old (even with breastfeeding on demand) and from the 4th month on, my nights became very difficult. Teething? Ear? Reflux? Probably not. Most likely your baby is going through the 4-month sleep regression.
What Happens in the 4th Month?
The 4th month of life is a milestone in the sleep habits of most babies. Up to this period, babies usually sleep deeply almost all the time and there isn’t much difference between daytime and nighttime sleep.
However, with the brain maturing, there is a change in sleep patterns and, even though for some mothers this change results in sleepless nights as there is a good chance the baby will wake up at the end of each sleep cycle, this is actually excellent for your baby – it’s a sign of growth and development1.
Unlike the sleep regressions that babies may go through at 10, 12, 18, or 24 months which can last a few weeks and pass without any intervention, the 4-month regression rarely goes away without help from the parents.
Taking Care of Baby’s Sleep
At this time, it is very important to promote sleep learning for your baby. What can parents do?2
- Be careful with the sleep associations you create for your baby. Putting them in the crib drowsy but still awake is a great way to help your child learn to sleep.
- Create a sleep routine to give your baby a sense of security.
- Keep a pleasant sleep environment. Pay attention to the lighting, noise, and temperature in the room.
What Not to Do
Remember that actions such as breastfeeding your child until they fall asleep, rocking, or nursing to sleep can create an incorrect sleep association, a bad habit, and consequently might not be the best alternative3.
Creating healthy sleep habits during this period can make all the difference in your baby’s life. Analyze your child’s temperament and your family’s lifestyle, and try to make bedtime an enjoyable and pleasant moment for everyone.”
