As soon as you start thinking about having a baby, the classic symptoms of pregnancy come to mind. “I’ll know when I’m pregnant, the symptoms are obvious.” But it might not be that simple, did you know? Some women may have very obvious pregnancy signs, but others may not show any at all, or just have a small hint that there’s a new life on the way. Others can even have very unusual and even strange symptoms, especially at the beginning of pregnancy. So, let’s discover five strong signs you could be pregnant even if they don’t seem like typical pregnancy symptoms.

1- Snoring

If you think snoring is bad, you might change your mind if you’re trying to get pregnant. The connection between snoring and early pregnancy is the swelling of the mucous membranes caused by all the hormonal changes1. Just as in the vagina, the nose is full of sensitive tissues and can therefore undergo changes, causing unusual snoring or making you start snoring. Of course, not all women who snore are pregnant, but snoring can be one of the signs that your body is changing and that you may soon be a mom.

2- Metallic Taste in the Mouth

You know that taste like a metal umbrella handle? Well, it’s not quite that. The metallic taste is different, as if the woman had eaten a small piece of steel wool first thing in the morning. The metallic taste can follow a woman all day and not even tooth brushing or eating something can completely get rid of that inconvenient taste2. Once again, taste changes caused by hormones (progesterone and estrogen) are to blame for this strange possible pregnancy sign.

3- Big Feet

Suddenly your feet no longer fit in your shoes! Yes, this can also be one of the signs of pregnancy. The body reacts in such a way that your feet can grow a few centimeters, but just enough for you to notice the change3. Shoes that once fit perfectly begin to bother you or squeeze at the toes or heel. However, unlike other possible pregnancy symptoms, feet that have grown do not return to their previous size; it’s a consequence you’ll have to live with. This all happens because of the loosening of leg ligaments to prepare for childbirth.

4- Vision

Many people don’t know this, but your eyes can change during pregnancy4. This usually happens for women who already use some sort of corrective lenses, such as for myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, or similar conditions. The eyes may get worse at the beginning of pregnancy. So, women who previously needed glasses for distance vision will feel that their prescription is no longer the same, for better or worse.

5- Constipation

Are you used to being constipated? But nothing compares to constipation at the beginning of pregnancy. This is by far the worst and strangest of the pregnancy signals your body can give5. That’s because intestinal dryness happens more often in women who already suffer from this problem, which means it can easily go unnoticed. The fact that it’s quite common and recurrent can be confusing and make it hard for a woman to realize she’s pregnant. So, if your constipation is worse than usual, try to take a pregnancy test as soon as possible.

Are There Other Strange Pregnancy Signs?

It’s possible for a woman to start having frequent gum and nose bleeds. That’s because the mucous membranes are highly irrigated with blood that flows faster and in greater quantity during pregnancy. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal! The vagina can also show an important pregnancy sign: swelling, change of color, and changes in its usual appearance. However, be careful, as this can also be a sign that something is wrong. The best way to know if it’s a pregnancy symptom is to see if there’s a bad smell, burning, itching, or even unusual discharge.

When Should You Take a Test?

The test can be done after a missed period, and unusual symptoms need to be associated with one very relevant factor: missing your period for at least 5 days after the expected date. If you have one or more unusual symptoms like the ones mentioned here, you should take a pregnancy test to make sure there’s a baby on the way. Still unsure?
